Continuous high insulin levels are associated with weight gain and lead to cardiometabolic diseases. 


In industrialized countries with a Western diet, three, mostly carbohydrate-rich meals have been established, with an additional evening snack or several snacks over the course of the day. Such excessive, carbohydrate-rich nutrition in combination with low physical activity supports the development of overweight, obesity and cardiometabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus. In present studies, primary findings indicate that the addition of exercise to energy restriction-induced weight loss improves the proportion of High Responders for glycaemic control and cardiometabolic risk compared to weight loss alone and a time-matched control group.

It is important to preserve skeletal muscle mass to maintain or improve metabolic homeostasis and physical function. In this context, the rates of protein synthesis and degradation in skeletal muscle constantly adapt to maintain muscle mass. Muscle protein synthesis and muscle protein breakdown rates are highly influenced by physical activity and food intake. High-quality protein consumption optimizes protein metabolism at both the whole-body and skeletal-muscle levels, especially in older people. Studies found, Plant-based protein sources that are rich in fibre and micronutrients may be valuable, but they have lower anabolic potential than animal-based proteins.

Ketogenic Diets

In a study to determine the effects of a 24-week ketogenic diet (consisting of 30 g carbohydrate, 1 g/kg body weight protein, 20% saturated fat, and 80% polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat) in obese patients .


The study showed the beneficial effects of a long-term ketogenic diet. It significantly reduced the body weight and body mass index of the patients. Furthermore, it decreased the level of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose, and increased the level of HDL cholesterol. Administering a ketogenic diet for a longer period did not produce any significant side effects in the patients.
